The Priorswood route
Somerset Council names Taunton (Priorswood) as one of seven recycling sites taking cement-bonded asbestos and asbestos-containing material from the home. You can't turn up unannounced: bookings are made online beforehand, saying how much you are bringing and how many trips. Each household gets a monthly allowance of eight 50-litre sacks over up to four visits (the council's page is silent on how asbestos counts towards it), then £19.30 per sheet.
- Seal it in two layers of plastic, preferably clear and heavy-duty, without a hole or tear.
- Bring your protective clothing and cleaning cloths in the same package.
- Staff won't help unload, so only bring what you can lift.
- Builders' and tradespeople's waste is turned away.

If it's more than a tip run
The council also collects household asbestos from your door: £352.20 a load to 31 March 2027, VAT included, plus £18.90 a sheet or sack, up to a tonne. Anything damaged, anything that isn't cement, or a job that involves dismantling something, is a job for a licensed contractor. See who can do what.
Building work in Taunton
Pre-2000 house, about to knock through, rewire, refit or convert? Find out what's there first. A single suspect material is a lab test; opening up a building is a survey. Over the border, Yeovil follows the same council rules, while Bath and Weston-super-Mare do not (compare all three).
